Overview of the University

University of Newcastle (UON) is a multi-campus University based in Australia with campuses in Newcastle, Central Coast, and Sydney in Australia and an overseas campus in Singapore. Dedicated to their core values of equity, excellence, engagement and sustainability, UON is committed to solving the world’s greatest problems. UON also has a proud history of collaborating with Indigenous Australians and acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands within their footprint areas, committing to their responsibilities as educators in this process. As an institution, they work with industry, community and government partners to translate new knowledge into innovations that make a real difference to communities, the economy and the planet.

Research Focus

UON’s research priorities reflect the mission-driven issues that they, as an institution, have the capacity, expertise and civic responsibility to address. Researchers at UON are working towards a healthier, sustainable and connected future and the institution has outlined 4 Engagement Priorities that guide their research and partnership efforts:

University Institutes:

Hunter Medical Research Institute

The Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) supports the Hunter’s internationally recognised health and medical research, education and training.  HMRI is a multidisciplinary partnership between the University of Newcastle and Hunter New England Local Health District and the community.  Established in 1998, HMRI facilitates collaborations between researchers translating scientific advances into better clinical care, competitive commercial products and improved health care guidelines.

Institute for Regional Futures

The Institute for Regional Futures recognises the significant social, cultural, spatial, and economic contribution of regional Australia to the nation and is invested in realising its vast potential. Based in the Hunter, our Institute is of and for regions. Our focus is on regions and regionalism nationally and internationally.

Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources

At the Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER), multidisciplinary teams are driving productivity and sustainability gains through applied research focused on innovation that is delivering transformational solutions in sectors of national significance.

International Relations

UON has a number of regional partnerships, working with community and industry partners. The University also has global partnerships and formal cooperation agreements, including with Pusan National University (South Korea), Nihon University (Japan), University of Waikato (New Zealand), a Pacific Partnership which collaborates with the Cook Islands, Samoa, Papua New Guinea and French Polynesia.
