World Technology Universities Congress 2025

Guest Invitations 

There is just four months to go until WTUC 2025. All WTUN members have been sent formal invitations and notification that registration is OPEN.

The deadline for register for Congress is Thursday 7 August. 

Call for Speakers 

Deadline: Thursday 03 July 2025 

We invite and encourage your institutions to contribute to the Congress theme ‘The Glocalization’ – Functional Role of Higher Education from Local to Global’ 

Delegates are invited to reflect, share, and challenge on a range of issues related to this year’s theme including the impact institutions have on their communities and places. This year’s theme refers to the concept that higher education institutions play a dual role in both local and global contexts. It emphasises the integration of global perspectives with local needs, ensuring that universities contribute to regional development while also engaging with international academic and research networks. 

In these sessions we will explore the sub-themes identified for the Congress through a range of short presentations leading into round table discussions. Each session will have a Chair to facilitate the discussion, and we hope the conversations might spark areas for future WTUN collaboration and workstream developments. 

Together, the sessions correspond to this year’s Congress sub-themes of: 

• Social Innovation for Area-based Development 
• Technology and Digital Transformation in Glocalized Education 
• University-Industry Partnerships for Sustainability 
• AI Technology and Higher Education

During this lecture, Prof. Eldabi shared his experience supporting student projects which implemented the use of Artificial Intelligence to solve real-world issues. He discussed the ongoing development of AI tools in light of the global climate to create real societal impact:

Of the sustainability and human interaction with AI, Professor Eldabi shared the following:

“…it’s about efficient utilization of AI technologies. It’s very important to consider that AI, as much as its data hungry, it’s also power hungry and we need to identify better ways and much more streamlined ways of using technology to support AI.
Fair access is another very important aspect of AI because if some people or a group of people are using AI, and others are not, then the one group will have a much more competitive and even more dominant impact on the other. People need to think about people-orientated AI so, AI for the sake of serving people rather than the other way around.”

BC Scholarship Prize 2025 – Applications Closed

We are pleased to share that following the deadline for this year’s WTUN BC Scholarship Prize, we have received 4 entries. 

These entries come from 3 WTUN Member Institutions from PhD students exploring a range of research topics including the application of artificial intelligence within healthcare settings, developing sustainable supply chains, supporting precise control of nanosatellites, and the use of nanomaterials for medications to treat parasitic diseases.

Tackling global challenges; “AI for good” and Global Water Security

‘AI for Good: Examples of Supporting SMEs and Victimised Communities’

Professor Eldabi will explore the concept of AI for Good, with a particular focus on how artificial intelligence can support communities and groups who may be unaware of or unable to access AI technologies. They will highlight two example projects based at the University of Bradford. The first project looks into raising awareness of the persecution faced by the Banyamulenge community. This group has experienced significant violence, displacement, and discrimination, and their situation is not often discussed. The project uses AI to analyse this digital content, helping to identify key themes, emotional tones, and influential voices in the conversation. The second project involves supporting a small or medium-sized enterprise (SME) in making sense of large volumes of accounting data. By applying AI techniques, the team developed demonstrators that show how this data could be used to attract clients to subscribe to tax accounting software.  

About Professor Tillal Eldabi: 

Professor Tillal Eldabi holds PhD and MSc in Simulation Modelling and BSc in Econometrics and Social Statistics. He has published over 100 articles in highly accredited journals and conferences and successfully supervising and graduating 18 doctoral students. Over a period of 20 years, his main research area was focussing on the use of Simulation Modelling to solve healthcare problems. He developed tailormade modelling packages to support health economists and clinicians to decide on the best treatment programmes.

‘Global Water Security: Need for a Holistic Approach’

Water is a life-essential resource but water availability and quality across the globe is increasingly threatened by intensifying climate change, rapid population growth, and escalating pollution. These issues are not just environmental by nature, but social, economic, and political.

In this presentation, Professor Roger Falconer introduces the concept of virtual water, where water is a hidden material in the goods we consume and reveals how everyday actions of individuals and industries have significant impact on the water security of communities near and far.

Join us for a guest lecture delivered by Professor Roger Falconer, esteemed former University of Bradford Professor and Honorary Graduate. 

With decades of experience in hydro-environmental modelling, Professor Falconer presents compelling, data-driven, cross-sector solutions to safeguard water quality and availability worldwide.

WTUN for International Women in Engineering Day 2025 – Call for Speakers

Join us to celebrate International Women in Engineering Day 2025 on Monday 23 June, at 15:00 (GMT+1), via Teams.

This year’s theme is #TogetherWeEngineer and we are opening this call for speakers to participate in a sharing session. We are seeking speakers from WTUN member universities to celebrate the work that women engineers around the world are doing. We are suggesting that speakers deliver 20-minute presentations on a topic of their choosing which links to the theme of #TogetherWeEngineer.

We would like to remind members that InWED is an annual event that centres and celebrates Women in Engineering but is not exclusively for women. We welcome all colleagues to participate in discussions around women in engineering at this event. We would like to achieve gender parity across the speakers in this event with women in engineering and the theme #TogetherWeEngineer taking central stage.

We are looking to create a programme to celebrate InWED which will:

• Highlight and celebrate women in engineering.
• Celebrate and acknowledge InWED 2025.
• Share best practices and include a sharing session on areas relevant to this year’s theme
• Facilitate Q&As to speakers on their experiences as women or working with women in the field of engineering.

We welcome submission of abstracts and expressions of interest (EOIs) via email to wtun@bradford.ac.uk.

The deadline for submissions is Friday 13 June 2025.

CUNY Launches India’s First Focused Research Initiative Honouring Achyuta Samanta 
 
New York, USA – In a landmark development reflecting the strengthening academic ties between the United States and India, the City University of New York (CUNY) inaugurated ‘The Achyuta Samanta India Initiative of the CUNY CREST Institute’ (ASIICCI), marking one of the few times a U.S. institution has named a dedicated research initiative after a contemporary Indian figure. 
 
The initiative, launched in the presence of Dr. Milton Santiago, President of Bronx Community College, and other eminent academicians, aims to deepen scholarly understanding and research focused on India’s cultural, educational, and social sectors, specifically spotlighting the state of Odisha. It represents a notable move by CUNY—a prestigious 175-year-old public university system serving over 300,000 students from 122 countries—to enhance international collaboration and academic exploration. 
 
Achyuta Samanta, after whom the initiative is named, is a renowned Indian educationist and philanthropist, celebrated for his extensive contributions to education and tribal empowerment. He is the founder of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) and Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), two institutions located in Odisha, India, which collectively educate over 80,000 students, primarily from tribal and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. His pioneering work in ensuring free quality education and holistic development to marginalised communities has earned him global recognition. 
 
In explaining the decision to name the initiative after Samanta, CUNY officials highlighted his unique contribution to education and social upliftment, stating, “Dr. Samanta’s model of educational empowerment and social reform through KIIT and KISS is an inspiration for academia worldwide.” 
 
The ASIICCI is designed as an interdisciplinary platform, offering scholars opportunities to research and engage deeply with the rich traditions, cultural heritage, and educational advancements from India. Additionally, it will facilitate an in-depth exploration of Samanta’s educational model that has successfully integrated academic excellence with social impact. 
 
While there are other U.S. institutions linked to Indian cultural figures—such as the Ambedkar International Center in Maryland named after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar—ASIICCI stands out as unique, being directly named after a living Indian educator. 
 
This initiative not only acknowledges Samanta’s extraordinary contributions but also represents a significant academic bridge, promoting mutual understanding and collaboration between India and the U.S., fostering academic dialogues that resonate globally.

Southern Alberta Institute of Technology

Centre for Energy Research and Clean Unconventional Technology Solutions (CERCUTS) 

In the single largest corporate gift to any post-secondary institution in Alberta, Imperial Oil Limited, one of Canada’s largest energy companies, has donated a beautiful $37 million lab facility to the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). 

The donation of this facility, to be named the Imperial Energy Innovation Centre, represents a powerful integration of Imperial’s extensive research presence in the oil sands recovery technology space with Applied Research and Innovation Services (ARIS). 

As a conductor driving applied research innovation with SAIT students, ARIS and industry, this facility will bring together leading researchers in petroleum engineering with the next generation of thinkers and innovators. The facility will be a launchpad for solutions to in-field challenges and will enhance the forward movement of applied energy research that drives Canadian industry. 

In this new 40,000 square feet (3,717 square meters) of space, ARIS will bring together energy research lab technologies and use its expertise to address industry driven challenges, support entrepreneurs with new innovations and engage students every step of the way. 

Centre for Innovation and Research in Advanced Manufacturing and Materials (CIRAMM) 

Richa Bhardwaj, a PhD candidate from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign who recently joined SAIT as a Principal Investigator at the Centre for Innovation and Research in Advanced Manufacturing and Materials (CIRAMM), is scheduled to participate in a panel discussion organized by WTUN on June 23, 2025 for Women in Engineering Day. She will share her experiences with advanced construction materials and her journey in research and innovation. 

SAIT’s Centre for Innovation and Research in Advanced Manufacturing and Materials (CIRAMM) was recently awarded funding by Calgary Economic Development to establish an Aerospace Composite Materials Laboratory. This new facility will enable researchers at SAIT to design and develop next-generation advanced composite materials, such as metal matrix composites, cermets, and fiber-reinforced composites, for strategic industries including aerospace and defense.

SUT Exchange News: SUT Lecturers Receive WTUN Grants! 

Congratulations, Aj. Tharathep Phiboon, Lecturer in School of Mechanical Engineering, SUT received the World Technology Universities Network Staff Exchange Grant of £2000 to carry out research at the School of Mechanical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. 

Theme/Focus: Aerodynamics testing and supervised machine learning applied to the wing of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) design, utilising emerging technologies, artificial intelligence. 

Asst. Prof. Dr.Pawornwan Rittipakorn, Dentist and Instructor, in Institute of Dentistry, SUT, received the World Technology Universities Network Staff Exchange Grant of £2000 to carry out a research at the College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing, University of Newcastle. 

Theme/Focus: Bone graft materials, oral health in ageing populations, improvement of patient care, surgical outcomes, and healthcare innovations.

Technische Universität Ilmenau & Mindanao State University

WTUN Members Awarded EU-ASEAN Research Connectivity Grant

We’re excited to share some great news from two WTUN member institutions:

Technische Universität Ilmenau (Germany) and Mindanao State University (The Philippines). They have been successfully selected as grantees of the EU-funded SCOPE-HE (Sustainable Connectivity Package – Higher Education) Research Connectivity program.

Together with four other universities from the EU and ASEAN regions, they have formed a collaborative cluster called GreenTrans-Edu. This initiative is dedicated to advancing research-based teaching with a focus on renewable energy (SDG 7), biodiversity and land use (SDG 15), and their broader contribution to climate action.
The cluster aims to enhance student and academic mobility and strengthen university networks focused on driving the green transformation for sustainability.
Launched in July 2024, the SCOPE-HE Program is implemented by Nuffic (the Dutch organization for the internationalization of education), in partnership with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
From TUIL, Prof. Dr Jens Wolling is leading the GreenTrans-Edu cluster, with Dr. Mira Rochyadi-Reetz serving as the project manager. Meanwhile Prof. Dr. Melba Angni from MSU, is the project coordinator at MSU.

💡Out of over 120 project proposals, only three university clusters were selected—making this a highly competitive and prestigious achievement.

Intra-network collaboration via the WTUN Exchange Programme 2024-25

Our assessment panel has convened, and the results are in—from a total of 21 applications, the successful 18 recipients of this year’s WTUN Exchange Programme funding have been decided. 

This year’s successful proposals include themes related to sustainable education, digital entrepreneurship, expanding student mobility opportunities alongside collaborations to develop novel cancer therapies, promoting organic agriculture and agri-tourism and combating the impact of climate change on indigenous communities. By encouraging projects within these domains, WTUN seeks to address pressing global challenges through collaborative efforts. 

We look forward to seeing the continued benefit of this pivotal initiative, fostering international collaboration among member institutions. Designed to support academic and professional services staff alongside PhD students, these exchanges aim to promote joint research, capacity-building, and the development of policy statements, aligning with WTUN’s commitment to advancing global technological innovation and education. 

We extend our congratulations to this year’s recipients and look forward to the innovative contributions they will bring to the WTUN community and beyond.

The World Technology Universities Network comprises 20 technology universities from across the world, each committed to driving inclusive, sustainable innovation in teaching and research to address the challenges of the 21st century.

Through these “Member in the Spotlight” articles, we aim to shine a light on the inspiring work of our members and inspire opportunities for connection and to foster collaboration between our members for the benefit of the network, our members, and the global community.

World Technology Universities Congress 2025 – Thaksin University, Thailand

The World Technology Universities Congress 2025 will be hosted by Thaksin University in Songkhla, Thailand from Monday 20 to Wednesday 22 October 2025. 

All WTUN Members have been sent a formal invitation to WTUC 2025 via their General Board Member.

The WTUC 2025 theme, chosen by hosts Thaksin University is: 

 ‘The ‘GLOCALISATION’: The Functional Role of Higher Education from Local to Global’. 

The subthemes for this year’s Congress are: 

• Social Innovation for Area-based Development
  The application of new ideas, strategies, and collaborations to address social, economic, and environmental challenges within specific geographic areas. This approach emphasizes community-driven, participatory solutions that leverage local knowledge, resources, and technology to foster sustainable and inclusive development. 

• Technology and Digital Transformation in ‘Glocalized’ Education
  The integration of advanced technologies and digital innovations in education to enhance both local and global learning experiences. It emphasizes how digital transformation enables higher education institutions to balance local educational needs while engaging with global academic and technological trends. 

• University-Industry Partnerships for Sustainability
  Collaborative efforts between higher education institutions and businesses to develop innovative solutions that address environmental, social, and economic sustainability challenges. These partnerships leverage academic research, technological advancements, and industry expertise to promote sustainable practices, workforce development, and responsible innovation. 

• AI Technology and Higher Education 
  The integration and impact of artificial intelligence within the context of tertiary education. It encompasses how AI technologies are transforming teaching, learning, research, administration, and student support in universities and colleges. This theme also addresses the challenges, opportunities, and ethical considerations that arise as AI reshapes educational practices, institutional strategies, and the future of academic work. 

Our main objective at the WTUN is to promote collaboration between technology universities worldwide, in order collectively to help solve major world challenges and educate the next generation of world leaders. 

As always, we hope that some of this year’s delegates will contribute to this year’s programme as speakers in our plenary sessions, bringing life and shedding light to the subthemes announced above. A call for speakers has been shared via the General and Operational Boards.

WTUN Brian Cantor Scholarship Prize 2025

The WTUN BC Scholarship Prize is open for applications until 05 June 2025! 

For the first time for 2025, we have expanded the eligibility to include current Masters by Research students registered at any WTUN member university in addition to PhD students. 

Applicants must demonstrate how their research thesis align with one of the two statements relating to the WTUN vision: 

• Undertaking cutting-edge, challenge-led research with direct benefits to people and society 
• Providing education for the next generation of global citizens who will have to respond to the world’s 21st century challenges

WTUN-Accelerated Student Entrepreneurship Programme 

The first WTUN-ASEP Programme launched in 2025 with the first workshop taking place at the University of Bradford in February. Read the full reflection of the first workshop here.

The WTUN-ASEP, organised by the Bradford-Renduchintala Enterprise Ecosystem (BREE) at University of Bradford, provided participating students guidance and coaching on ideation, business development, pitching sessions and investment opportunities for a budding enterprise alongside intensive networking with professional entrepreneurs and 29 students from around the world. 

A student from Suranaree University of Technology (Khaing Ngwe Ngwe Thin) has shared a video blog of her experience at Workshop 1 in Bradford:  

Ms Thin said of the programme, “The opportunity you shouldn’t miss if you are a youth who is interested in entrepreneurship.” 

Participants look forward to the second workshops taking place at Beijing University of Chemical Technology in early July 2025. We look forward to seeing these start-ups come to fruition at the close of the Programme in summer.

Southern Alberta Institute of Technology

On behalf of Applied Research and Innovation Services (ARIS) 

ENERGY EFFICIENCY RETROFITS FOR FRIENDSHIP CENTRES 

The Green Building Technology Access Centre partnered with the Alberta Native Friendship Centres Association (ANFCA) to improve energy efficiency in Friendship Centres, creating optimized spaces while incorporating training and community engagement events such as hosting building sustainability summits. 

Friendship Centres are vital hubs for urban Indigenous communities, providing essential services, cultural programming and social support and where building operations and maintenance are often put aside or become difficult to manage. 

Building evaluations were conducted at 16 Friendship Centres, with four Centres undergoing detailed energy audits. Three Friendship Centres completed targeted energy efficiency upgrades, with a full year of emissions monitoring, and received support to become demonstration hubs. This project was undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada. 

“Since 2021, ANFCA has collaborated with SAIT Green Building Technologies and four Friendship Centres — in St. Paul, Medicine Hat, Fort McMurray, and Grande Prairie — to reduce carbon emissions, improve energy performance, and lower operating costs. The project has already achieved a greenhouse gas reduction of 20 tonnes annually, with ANFCA as a whole cutting an additional 35 tonnes of emissions per year. These savings allow Friendship Centres to redirect resources to vital community services, including housing, food security, health and employment programs.”

Eligibility/Participants: Undergraduate students in Business, Engineering and Science

Programme Dates: Late May to Early August, 2026

Overview: Summer Down Under 2026 – The University of Newcastle has announced a reform of its calendar, shifting the start and end dates of its two main semesters. In practical terms, this means that the mid-year break (Australian winter / Northern hemisphere summer) will be extended. This new mid-year break will start the last week of May and run through to early August, providing 9 solid weeks of short-term programming and intensive modules. Planning is currently underway to provide a range of programs relevant to UG cohorts in Business, Engineering and Science, alongside guaranteed on-campus housing.

Deadline for application(s), programme fees and full details will be shared in future newsletters.

WTUN in Brasilia: Development Manager, Denise Whitehead attends FAUBAI 2025

WTUN Development Manager, Denise Whitehead, is attending FAUBAI 2025 in Brasilia this week. 

During the international conference, Denise will be connecting with institutions across Central and Latin America and beyond under the theme “Towards Equitable and Sustainable Partnerships”, aligning with the collective mission of the WTUN and its member institutions.

WTUN Member, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, will be in attendance and Denise will be connecting with UFRN’s Operational Board member, Professor Bruno Motta de Carvalho. 

Ahead of her travels to Brazil, Denise shared her expectations for the conference:

“I am looking forward to representing the WTUN and its members at FAUBAI 2025 for the first time. The theme “Towards Equitable and Sustainable Partnerships” aligns perfectly with the WTUN’s mission and I can’t wait to discuss opportunities for impactful collaboration with universities from Brazil, across LATAM/C and beyond!”

Platforming researchers from across our network

We are proud to have hosted 4 online events this academic year to share knowledge from across the network and provide a platform to researchers and academics. 

WTUN for International Week of Science and Peace 2024:

Hosted by Dr Colins Imoh from University of Bradford, 3 researchers shared their insights into how science can be utilised as a catalyst for peace in a world filled with chaos, despair and anarchy: 

• Dr Prem Shankar Pandey from Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science reimagined science as a force for unity 

• Prof Salma N Marohombsar from Mindanao State University discussed mathematics as a tool for social good 

• Prof Dr SudalaiMuthu T from Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science shared his insights on AI’s role in the service of peace. 

WTUN for International Day of Clean Energy 2025: 

To emphasise the much needed transition to clean energy by industry and governments worldwide, this online event platformed recent developments in clean energy across the network: 

• Professor Puspamitra from Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science shared her research on Na/Mg-Ion Batteries which could revolutionise affordable, clean, and renewable energy storage 

• Professor Muralidhar Miryala from Shibaura Institute of Technology shared his work into the transformative role of superconducting technologies  

• Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr Mohd Fadhil bin Md. Din from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia shared how higher education institutions can advance planetary health through energy transition, research and policy 

• Prof M. K Badrinarayanan from Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science presented grassroots clean energy initiatives in India and their impact in empowering rural communities 

WTUN for World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development 2025:

Hosted by Ahlia University with participation from colleagues from University of Bradford, this event shed light on the power of IoT for Smart and Sustainable cities: 

Chaired by Professor Yousif Albastaki from Ahlia University, four researchers shared their research and insights into the world of IoT: 

• Dr Ammar Aldallal from Ahlia University discussed optimizing urban water with the use of IoT technologies for more sustainable cities 

• Dr Khaled Ramadan from Ahlia University shared the use of 5G technologies to transform our urban lives 

• Dr Ahmed Jedidi from Ahlia University shared the use of IoT for intelligent transportation and logistics within cities and urban environments 

• Dr Daniele Scrimieri from University of Bradford explored the use of intelligent digital models for community heat networks in urban environments 

WTUN for International Day of Zero Waste 2025:

To highlight the global need to reduce waste, with a focus on fashion and textiles, this event brought discussions on sustainable production and consumption practices to light: 

Chaired by Dr James (Rob) Innes from University of Bradford, researchers from across the network shared their knowledge on the waste crisis: 

•  Professor Charlou Bautista from Mindanao State University discussed a student startup, NeoRanao, which is integrating innovative circular solutions into the fashion industry and local communities 

• Dr Helen Maguire from Atlantic Technological University showcased clothing repair as a climate act, combating the underutilisation of clothing and the barriers to clothing lifecycle extension for ordinary people

WTUN Student Competition 2025 is now closed to applications

The deadline for entries in application to this year’s WTUN Student Competition has now passed. There was a total of 19 team entries submitted from 8 member universities, demonstrating keen interest from students across our network in sustainable innovation for planetary health. 

Each proposal will now be assessed by two members of the assessment panel. Assessment is due for completion by mid May and we hope to communicate the outcome to all applicants by the end of May.

The BC prize is intended to recognise cutting-edge, challenge-led research with direct benefits to people and society.   

It is awarded to students conducting research that demonstrates alignment with the WTUN’s vision of providing education for the next generation of global citizens who will have to respond to the word’s 21st century challenges and to assist students to pursue their research or career.   

Eligibility: 

WTUN member universities can submit a maximum of 2 applications each year.  

The prize is open to students in any discipline at any of the WTUN’s member institutions, currently studying for their PhD or Masters by Research at the deadline for application.

Now in its third year, the WTUN has previously awarded the Prize to two WTUN PhD students for their cutting-edge, impactful research: 

2022/23 Recipient:  

Theresa Heering, PhD Candidate Coventry University* 

Research title: ‘The increased prevalence of childhood anterior cruciate ligament injuries – Identifying those at risk’. 

Theresa’s application to the BC Scholarship Prize was highly regarded by the assessment panel who each noted that it “demonstrates global collaboration and aligns with the SDG goals and WTUN vision” and that the accompanying endorsement from industry and academics at both institutions is “indicative of the quality and potential impact”.

2023/24 Recipient:  

Nadiia Sadova, PhD Candidate, University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria 

Nadiia’s research interests include immunoassays for inflammatory and stress biomarkers and intestinal function and oxidative stress in Drosophila melanogaster (Common fruit fly).  

Among this year’s entries, Nadiia’s entry was highly regarded by the assessment panel who agreed that her application and work best demonstrated a commitment to cutting-edge, challenge led research which will have direct benefit to people and society. The panel also noted the accompanying endorsement from an industry expert.

Atlantic Technological University 

Dr Eoghan Furey from Atlantic Technological University visited Technische Universität Ilmenau through the WTUN Exchange Programme 2023-24. 

His visit focused on data-intensive systems and visualisation and biomedical engineering and sustainable mobility technologies with prospective collaboration in areas relating to Postgraduate research training models, EU funding frameworks and collaboration opportunities, international student mobility and innovation in blended learning and research-led education.

WTUN Exchange Programme 2024-25

The deadline for proposals in application to this year’s WTUN Exchange Programme has now passed. There was a total of 21 fully completed proposal submitted from 13 member universities, making this year the most competitive yet.

Each proposal will now be assessed by two members of the assessment panel. Assessment is due for completion by 18 April and we hope to communicate the outcome to all applicants by the end of April.  

Thank you to all who supported this programme and good luck to all who have submitted a proposal.

Theresa’s application to the BC Scholarship Prize was highly regarded by the assessment panel who each noted that it “demonstrates global collaboration and aligns with the SDG goals and WTUN vision” and that the accompanying endorsement from industry and academics at both institutions is “indicative of the quality and potential impact”.

Nadiia Sadova, PhD Candidate, University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria 

Nadiia’s research interests include immunoassays for inflammatory and stress biomarkers and intestinal function and oxidative stress in Drosophila melanogaster (Common fruit fly).  

Among this year’s entries, Nadiia’s entry was highly regarded by the assessment panel who agreed that her application and work best demonstrated a commitment to cutting-edge, challenge led research which will have direct benefit to people and society. The panel also noted the accompanying endorsement from an industry expert.

Programme Name: Summer Down Under 2026

Eligibility/Participants: Undergraduate students in Business, Engineering and Science

Programme Dates: Late May to Early August, 2026

Overview: Summer Down Under 2026 – The University of Newcastle has announced a reform of its calendar, shifting the start and end dates of its two main semesters. In practical terms, this means that the mid-year break (Australian winter / Northern hemisphere summer) will be extended. This new mid-year break will start the last week of May and run through to early August, providing 9 solid weeks of short-term programming and intensive modules. Planning is currently underway to provide a range of programs relevant to UG cohorts in Business, Engineering and Science, alongside guaranteed on-campus housing.

International Green Gown Awards 2025 – Closing Soon!

The International Green Gown Awards are supported by UN Environment Programme and are open to any university or college across the world. Winners will be announced in October.  

Recognising exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken by the world’s universities and colleges, the International Green Gown Awards set the bar and put every learning institution at the heart of delivering the UN Global Goals.

The 2025 UK and Ireland Green Gown awards are delivered by EAUC in association with UKRI. This year’s awards will recognise exceptional sustainability initiatives taking place across the post-16 education sector. 

Institutions can enter multiple projects for consideration, but each project can only be entered into one category. 

Application Deadline: 5 June 2025 NOON    

This year’s categories include themes on benefitting society, campus health, food and drink, creating impact, and digital futures.

We invite WTUN colleagues to speak at our upcoming event to commemorate International Day of Zero Waste under the theme ‘Towards Zero Waste in Fashion and Textiles’.

About International Day of Zero Waste: 

“Humanity’s unsustainable production and consumption practices are driving the planet towards destruction.  

Households, small businesses and public service providers generate between 2.1 billion and 2.3 billion tons of municipal solid waste every year – from packaging and electronics to plastics and food. However, global waste management services are ill-equipped to handle this, with 2.7 billion people lacking access to solid waste collection and only 61-62 per cent of municipal solid waste being managed in controlled facilities. Humanity must act urgently to address the waste crisis.” 

This year’s International Day of Zero Waste emphasizes the need for action in the fashion and textile sector to reduce waste and advance circular solutions: Towards zero waste in fashion and textiles.

The rapid growth in textiles production and consumption is outpacing sustainability efforts in the sector, causing severe environmental, economic, and social impacts, particularly in the Global South. Clothing production doubled from 2000 to 2015 and yet, 92 million tonnes of textile waste is produced globally. Reflecting on Workshop 1 of the WTUN-ASEP 2025

The first workshop in the WTUN-Accelerated Student Entrepreneurship Programme 2025 concluded just over 2 weeks ago. As participants have returned to their home institutions with time to reflect on the intensive 5-day entrepreneurship workshop, they have shared their experiences online: 

“Over five intensive days, they engaged in a transformative experience—developing innovative business ideas, participating in high-energy brainstorming sessions, and confidently pitching their projects to a panel of three expert judges, in a setting similar to the world-renowned Dragons’ Den!”

Bradford-Renduchintala Enterprise Ecosystem (BREE), University of Bradford, hosts of Workshop 1, reflect on the week:  

“This workshop brought together entrepreneurial-minded students from across the globe, with Bradford-Renduchintala Enterprise Ecosystem taking an active role in developing and accelerating newly formed enterprises, led by dynamic international founder teams, to create real-world solutions…. Great appreciation to our expert speakers for sharing their entrepreneurial journeys throughout the week, as well as to the participating WTUN member universities for their contributions.

Omotayo Adebisi, one of the “tame dragon’s” at the final Dragon’s Den panel, shared her experiences in “supporting the next generation of entrepreneurs”:

From ideation to pitching, their dedication and creativity were truly impressive, showcasing the potential of these aspiring entrepreneurs to shape the future… I was blown away by the passion and ambition displayed by the teams.

Collaborating internationally via the WTUN Exchange Programme

The recipients of the 2023/24 WTUN Exchange Programme are finalising their visits and preparing their impact summary reports to share their experiences and progress in newfound collaborations. 

Dr Esra AlDhaen from Ahlia University is one of the most recent recipients to complete her exchange visit to University of Bradford, hosted by Dr Amizan Omar, Associate Professor in Strategic Management at the School of Management. 

During her visit, Esra shared insights with final-year undergraduate students at University of Bradford on demonstrating impact aligned with the SDGs, answering the question posed by host Dr Amizan Omar “How can academic research translate into tangible progress on sustainability challenges?” Read a summary the seminar given by Dr AlDhaen to a group of final-year undergraduate students at the University of Bradford via this post on LinkedIn.

Key themes from the discussion included: 

• The significance of research impact – Moving beyond theoretical exploration to influence policy and practice. 
• Integrating SDGs into academic research – Identifying relevant SDGs and embedding them meaningfully into research methodologies. 
• Demonstrating real-world impact – Exploring strategies to translate research findings into actionable change.

Dr AlDhaen also presented strategies for maximising visibility and real-world influence for meaningful engagement from policymakers, industry leaders and fellow researchers. A summary of these discussions were shared here.

WTUN Student Competition 2025 – Will your students tackle this year’s challenge?

The WTUN Student Competition 2025 is open for submissions until 10 April 2025: https://www.wtu-n.net/student-competition/  

This year, students are asked to propose an innovative solution which addresses “Sustainable Innovation for Planetary Health – Local Solutions for Global Problems”.  

All proposals are presented in video format, accompanied by a written application, and must address the UN’s SDGs as well as demonstrate public engagement, measurable societal impact, cost-efficiency and deliverability. Bonus points are awarded to multidisciplinary teams and proposing solutions which can be applied to another geographical area of a fellow WTUN member. 

Winners are showcased on our website and provided with a cash prize.

Looking ahead to WTUC2025

7 months to go until WTUN members unite at World Technology Universities Congress 2025, hosted by Thaksin University in Songkhla, Thailand in October 2025. 

This year’s theme is “The Glocalization: Functional Role of Higher Education from Local to Global.”

Welcome to this month’s roundup of updates and events happening across the network.

WTUN-Accelerated Student Entrepreneurship Programme

Last week, the Bradford-Renduchintala Enterprise Ecosystem at University of Bradford hosted 29 students from 7 universities for 5 days of intensive networking, ideation, business development and presentations at the workshop-one of the inaugural WTUN – Accelerated Student Entrepreneurship Programme (ASEP).  

Friday marked the final day of workshop one, culminating in a total of 17 separate business ideas being pitched during an exciting ‘tame’ Dragon’s Den-style event. Student founder teams showcased their innovative business ideas to a panel of entrepreneurs and business experts who then offered valuable insights and constructive feedback to help guide the next steps in their entrepreneurial journey.  

The programme offers students the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of running an enterprise through fast paced, real-life experiences, with the goal of enabling students to progress from the first meeting to securing funding for a social or business enterprise in just four months. 

Ahead of the workshop, participating students shared what they hoped to achieve in this first event: 

The first 5-day workshop focussed on introductions, generation and selection of enterprise ideas. Described by one participant as “a ‘Mini-MBA’”, participating students were coached and supported throughout. Participating students will now continue to receive ongoing support from the team at BREE to develop and test their business plan. Any student wishing to participate in workshop-two, hosted by Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT), in Beijing is required to submit a business plan by mid-April.  

Throughout the programme, students were encouraged to build on “ideas for a different future”, challenge perspectives and utilise humour to bond with one another and develop their ideas. With the use of props and permission to think outside of the box, participants were asked to consider the full breadth and depth of creativity throughout their entrepreneurial development. 

On day 4, the group of entrepreneurs were taken to the surrounding countryside, The Yorkshire Dales, to bond with one another, connect with nature, and to continue to build their connections outside of the “boardroom” and in an “unconventional” business setting.  

Following the conclusion of the final day, students shared their experiences on social media, celebrating their new skills, friends, and business partners:

Students have returned to their home institutions but will reunite for the second workshop hosted at Beijing University of Chemical Technology in China from 30 June to 04 July 2025. This entrepreneurship ‘boot camp’ will support founder teams, finalise prototypes, concepts and designs, develop a compelling presentation and promotional literature, and on the last day have the opportunity to present to a panel of real investors and benefactors for real investment with which to grow their new enterprise, in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style pitching session.

WTUN Exchange Programme 2023-24

Post-Exchange Case Study: Research and Praxis-based, Multidimensional Model of Promoting Equity in Higher Education 

Hosted by Professor Penny Jane Burke, the UNESCO Chair in Equity, Social Justice and Higher Education and the Co-Director of CEEHE, Dr Venganai’s aim was to exchange ideas and explore potential areas of collaboration, such as curriculum development and the co-design of joint short courses and to share the Women’s University in Africa (WUA)’s model of addressing gender disparity and fostering equity in university education. The shared vision of the two institutions provided fertile ground for future research partnerships between the two institutions. 

“My exchange to University of Newcastle was fruitful and demonstrates WTUN’s commitment to enabling mobility and global citizenship opportunities, and as I share my experiences, this has ensured that I also speak about WTUN support and its purpose…I learned a lot about the work at CEEHE and their model in addressing inequities within the University of Newcastle and the surrounding communities…I have already started sharing with colleagues at Women’s University in Africa about what I learnt during my exchange regarding best practice in promoting equity in higher education through research and practice.”

In 2023, Dr Ammar AlBalushi from Majan University College visited Dr Mullika Sungsanit, Vice-Rector Research Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Suranaree University of Technology via the WTUN Exchange Programme. His exchange focused on entrepreneurship but extended beyond traditional capacity-building to foster cultural understanding and the Thai-context for entrepreneurship.

Programme Dates: Late May to Early August, 2026

Overview: Summer Down Under 2026 – The University of Newcastle has announced a reform of its calendar, shifting the start and end dates of its two main semesters. In practical terms, this means that the mid-year break (Australian winter / Northern hemisphere summer) will be extended. This new mid-year break will start the last week of May and run through to early August, providing 9 solid weeks of short-term programming and intensive modules. Planning is currently underway to provide a range of programs relevant to UG cohorts in Business, Engineering and Science, alongside guaranteed on-campus housing.

Deadline for application(s), programme fees and full details will be shared in future newsletters.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2025

Tuesday 11 February is the United Nations designated ‘International Day of Women and Girls in Science’. The WTUN’s collective commitment to driving inclusive and sustainable innovation in education and research cannot be achieved without a sustained, intentional and impactful commitment to the advancement of gender equity and the inclusion of all talent in the sciences. This Day is a reminder that women and girls play a critical role in science and technology communities and that their participation should be strengthened. 

The WTUN is proud to provide a platform to scientists and researchers across the network through our activities and online events. On this day, we’d like to pay particular attention to and highlight a cross-section of the contributions made by women at WTUN events over the past year:

WTUN-Accelerated Student Entrepreneurship Programme

Next week, 29 students and 3 staff,  from 7 universities and 5 countries will attend the first of two workshops as part of the inaugural WTUN-Accelerated Student Entrepreneurship Programme (ASEP).

About ASEP:

The Accelerated Student Entrepreneurship Programmes (ASEP), established by the University of Bradford in 2016, offers students the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of running an enterprise. These programmes are fast paced, real-life experiences, with the goal of enabling students to progress from first meeting to securing funding for a social or business enterprise in just four months. Many of the students who have attended the programme have gone on to run successful businesses.

Inaugural WTUN- ASEP 2025

The first WTUN ASEP Workshops will be co-hosted by University of Bradford (UK) and Beijing University of Chemical Technology (China)

The WTUN – Accelerated Student Entrepreneurship Programme is structured around two 5 day workshops. The first workshop focuses on introductions, generation and selection of enterprise ideas and the formation of founder teams, where appropriate. Following this workshop students receive support to develop and test their business plan. Learn more.

“These workshops will bring together the most talented and entrepreneurial minded students across different continents within the World Technology University Network to create successful international businesses. We really appreciate the support from WTUN participating institutes and the WTUN central office, and we will continue to work with WTUN member institutes to expand the programme and develop a wider entrepreneurial community for our students and staff.”

Ahlia University hosted the First PhD Forum on Digital Media and Commnication Technology, at which Mr. Yousef Al-Binkhalil emphasised that “AI is no longer a luxury but a necessity for any media institution aiming to stay competitive in today’s fast-evolving digital landscape.” To signify the increasing influence of AI in digital media, Professor Mansoor Alaali, President of Ahlia University, in his opening remarks “made a notable statement by revealing that he had prepared his speech in collaboration with ChatGPT, with some modifications.”

Prof. Dr. Mohd Shafry bin Mohd Rahim appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia by the Ministry of Higher Education of Malaysia 

Prof. Shafry  is a distinguished Professor with expertise in Computer Science, specifically in Image Processing, Spatial Modelling, and Artificial Intelligence. He previously served as a Research Fellow at the Media and Game Innovation of Excellence (MaGICX) and the Institute of Human-Centred Engineering (iHuMeN) at UTM. Prior to his appointment as Vice-Chancellor, he held the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International) at UTM.

A University project led by Dr Sobia Kauser and Stuart Walker has won a prestigious Times Higher Education Award 2024 for a project that allows disabled students to access scientific laboratories. The system, known as ‘Managing Risk for Impaired Laboratory Users’ (MaRiLU) won the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion category and was described by judges as “incredibly impactful”.

The 2024 Congress convened colleagues from 13 of our member institutions; Atlantic Technological University, Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science, Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences, Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, Majan University College, Mindanao State University, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Shibaura Institute of Technology, Suranaree University of Technology, Thaksin University, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, University of Bradford, and hosts of WTUC2024, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

Apply now to the WTUN Exchange Programme 2024-25

The WTUN Exchange Programme 2024-25 is now open for applications.

This year, 18 grants of £2,000 are available for academic and professional services staff members and PhD students to visit another WTUN member institution.

This year, proposals are encouraged within focus areas including Gender Equality, Sustainable Cities and Communities and Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

Please note: Each WTUN member institution is only permitted to submit two proposals. Therefore, each application must be approved by the sending institution’s Operational Board Member.

The deadline for applications is Thursday 20 March 2025*.

WTUN for International Day of Clean Energy

The WTUN has shared a call for speakers for a proposed online event on Tuesday 28 January between 12:00-15:00 (GMT).

Any colleagues who wish to contribute to this session under the theme of “Affordable and Clean Energy” (SDG7), are invited to submit a brief abstract of their intended talk.

WTUN Student Competition 2024-25 is now live!

We are pleased to announce the launch of this year’s Student Competition. For 2024-25, students will work together to address the theme ‘Sustainable Innovation for Planetary Health – Local Solutions for Global Problems’.

Working in teams of 2-4, students are tasked to produce a new, sustainable and innovative solution to address their chosen UN SDG(s).

Open to undergraduate and postgraduate students, extra points will be awarded to inter-disciplinary teams.

ATU researchers, led by Dr. José M. Fariñas-Franco, contributed to a global study on the collapse of native oyster reefs, featured in BBC Wildlife Magazine. Highlighting international collaboration, the project combined cutting-edge marine technology and ecological expertise to document the native oyster habitats off Ireland’s coast. Read more here.

A new open-access digital book, Lakes in Ireland – Mirrors of Change, showcases the vital role of Ireland’s lakes. The publication features contributions from ATU researchers Dr. Heather Lally, Dr. Emma Gray, and Professor Frances Lucy, who co-authored chapters on lake biodiversity and invasive aquatic species. This collaborative effort underscores the importance of interdisciplinary research in addressing environmental challenges facing Ireland’s lakes. Read more here.

TU Ilmenau celebrates an upgraded Virtual Reality Lab, supported by Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technologies. TU Ilmenau’s state-of-the-art Virtual Reality Lab features 77 loudspeakers for realistic acoustic simulations. As part of the I3TC, it offers cutting-edge resources for immersive technology research and invites collaborations with industry and academia to advance VR/AR and spatial audio innovations.
