WTUN Exchange Programme: Advancing Global Collaboration in Sustainable Transport

Professor Thangakumar, Head of Computer Science and Engineering at Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS), recently visited the University of Bradford as part of the WTUN Exchange Programme 2023/24. His visit exemplifies how academic exchanges foster impactful collaboration, providing a platform to address global challenges like sustainable transport.

Professor Thangakumar J participating in WTUN Exchange Programme at the University of Bradford.

Prof. Thangakumar’s research focuses on the future of Electric Vehicles (EVs), particularly those powered by hybrid, solar, or battery systems. Recognizing the UK’s advanced EV market and the University of Bradford’s reputation for academic excellence, he sought to deepen his knowledge and develop innovative strategies to maximize EV adoption in India and beyond.

To facilitate this, Prof. Thangakumar connected with the WTUN Secretariat, who helped establish a collaboration with University of Bradford faculty members. Prof. Tillal Eldabi and Assoc. Prof. Irfan  Mehmood, experts in Business Analytics, engaged with him to explore interdisciplinary research opportunities. The exchange aimed to address pressing sustainability concerns by integrating EV technology into solutions that align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Climate Action and Innovation in Infrastructure.

“Without the guidance and support of Prof Tillal Eldabi, Head, School of Business Analytics, Law and Social Sciences  and Prof Irfan Mehmood, Associate Professor, School of Business Analytics, Law and Social Sciences, this collaboration would have not been possible.

I had the privilege to collaborate with esteemed academicians from the University of Bradford on a project focused on Sustainable Transportation Using Hybrid Solar Power Vehicles. This experience was enriched by interactions with global experts, brainstorming sessions, and presentations that widened my perspective on cutting-edge technologies and sustainable solutions.”

-Professor Thangakumar J, Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science

WTUN Newsletter – November 2024

Welcome to this month’s roundup of the stories, updates and events happening across the World Technology Universities Network.

WTUN Operational Board Bulletin:

WTUN Research Agenda Development

On the 15 November, a consortium of European and ASEAN located WTUN members, led by Dr Ciarán Ó hAnnracháin and Atlantic Technological University, Ireland applied to the EU-ASEAN Sustainable Connectivity Package. Drawing on the areas of excellence, interest and specialisms of the individual partner institutions and opportunities for meaningful collaboration and impactful research activities, Blue Economy was agreed as the chosen focus area. Together, WTUN members Atlantic Technological University (Cluster Lead), University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria (EU Partner), Suranaree University of Technology (Lead ASEAN Partner), Mindanao State University and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia submitted the project titled ‘Enhancing University Alliances for Sustainable Education in Aquatic Networks: Blue Economy Advanced Mobility programme (EU-ASEAN BEAM)’.

Harnessing the established relationships and history of close collaboration by virtue of shared membership of WTUN, the cluster was able to move quickly, identifying shared areas of interest and opportunity for comprehensive, comparative research related to the Blue Economy, freshwater and marine/coastal environments, from ‘source to sea’ in Austria, Ireland, Malaysia, The Philippines, and Thailand. A key pillar of the bid was the opportunity for engagement and dissemination with wider, global WTUN membership, including at the annual WTUN Congress. As members of the WTUN, the cluster will also have access to expertise beyond the cluster members (e.g. those outside EU/ASEAN regions). The WTUN also offers opportunities for the project to be expanded and developed beyond the original remit, enhancing impact and long-term research opportunities. EU-ASEAN BEAM’s goal is to collaborate with coastal and shoreline enterprises and communities to improve their sustainability while concentrating on the social and economic requirements of the area. The proposed research agenda, draws heavily from the individual partners own areas of expertise covering a wide range of key concepts from coastal blue economy, freshwater blue economy, blue zones and wellness tourism and community engagement, capacity building and entrepreneurship.

If successful, this will represent a milestone for the WTUN and will hopefully serve as an example for future collaborative research bids. We wish the team every success with the funding application.

Notification of selected HEI clusters expected January 2025.

Webinar: Science and Technology in the Service of Peace

Webinars

Science and Technology in the Service of Peace!

Can science act as a catalyst for peace in a world filled with chaos, despair, and anarchy? World Science Day for Peace and Development is an annual observance established by UNESCO through Resolution 31 C/20. This day highlights the significant contributions of scientific knowledge and research to societal development and international peace. It serves as a reminder of how science can tackle pressing global challenges, foster collaboration among nations, and promote social equity.

While science is frequently portrayed as a driver of conflict and division, its true potential lies in its ability to be a powerful tool for peacebuilding and fostering social harmony. By harnessing scientific advancements, we can bridge divides across cultures and ideologies, enhance mutual understanding, and work towards a more peaceful and sustainable world.

Social media is a powerful technological tool that facilitates communication and collaboration, allowing people to connect across borders and mobilize for common causes. However, these platforms can also spread disinformation, incite hatred, and radicalise individuals.

Drones represent another technological advancement that has significantly reshaped our daily lives. We often hear about their use in warfare, particularly in ongoing conflicts such as those in Ukraine and the Middle East, where they are employed for surveillance and targeted strikes.

However, it’s essential to recognise the beneficial applications of drones as well. They can play a crucial role in disaster response efforts, helping to navigate hazardous conditions for search and rescue operations and delivering essential supplies like food and medicine to remote or affected areas. In agriculture, drones are increasingly becoming vital assets; they help monitor crop health, detect pests early, and optimise irrigation practices, leading to improved yields and resource management. Additionally, drones assist in infrastructure inspections, minimising risks while enhancing efficiency in construction and maintenance.

This talk highlights that science is not solely a tool for war; it can also help address the root causes of conflict, such as poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation. By addressing these underlying issues, we can create the conditions necessary for lasting peace.

Welcome to this month’s roundup of the stories, updates and events happening across the World Technology Universities Network.

World Technology Universities Congress 2024

02-04 October 2024, University Technology Malaysia, Johor Bahru, Malaysia

On behalf of all at the World Technology Universities Network we would like to begin this newsletter by extended a thank you those who attended the ninth World Technology Universities Network Congress in Johor Bahru, Malaysia earlier this month. A very special thanks goes to our esteemed hosts, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia for delivering this fantastic event and for their hospitality.

Over the three-day programme 25+ speakers provided expert perspectives on a wide range of subjects under the theme of ‘Alliances for Diplomacy: Harnessing University Collaborations for Planetary Health’. WTUC 2024 also featured the second WTUN Annual Lecture, delivered by Professor Datuk TS. Ir. Dr. Siti Hamisah Tapsir, Group CEO; University Vice-Chancellor UCSI University, Malaysia.

During her opening address, WTUN Chair and Vice Chancellor of the University of Bradford UK, Professor Shirley Congdon reminded delegates that “the WTUN exists for the benefit of others…and [during WTUC 2024] is well positioned to maximise the collective power of our member universities for the benefit of our students, staff and local and global communities. Our network is intellectually rich, strongly connected to industry, and youthful. Collectively, we are committed to our values of innovation and sustainability, and we must continue to create meaningful longevity and construct an impactful legacy as a network.”

Thank you to all our esteemed speakers for their valuable contribution to this event. Many positive discussions took place, and key decisions were reached about the Network’s values and priorities; both of which will guide future growth and ensure greater impact than ever. We look forward to sharing more with you in the weeks to come.

A message from Dr Ciarán Ó hAnnracháin, Chair, WTUN Operational Board

“Once again, I’d like to thank our colleagues and friends at UTM for hosting a wonderful congress. During our time we covered a lot of ground and had broad and varied discussions on the specific research sessions, as well as the priorities for the WTUN as we move into a new year.  I am grateful for all your engagement and contribution to what was a very successful and fruitful congress.  As we move forward, I hope we will continue to refocus our energies on activities that add value to the network and our individual university strategies.  It is important for us to embed the work of the WTUN in our institutions, to engage as many staff and students as possible in our collaborations, and to clearly articulate the role of WTUN in our internationalisation agendas.  I’d like to focus this year on developing our research agenda and to facilitate joint actions to enable this. I look forward to facilitating this cooperation through the Operational Board for the year ahead!”

WTUN News Roundup – September 2024

Welcome to this month’s roundup of the stories, updates and events happening across the World Technology Universities Network.

WTUN Operational Board Bulletin:

Message from Operational Board Chair

Dr. Ciarán Ó hAnnracháin,
Strategic Projects Manager, Atlantic Technological University
WTUN Operational Board Chair

Dear colleagues,

As we move into another year of WTUN, I am becoming more aware of the current levels of engagement and the commitment made by each of you to represent, and also to bring value, to your organisations.

There are already many demands on our finances, and it is becoming increasingly clear that if we wish to increase our engagement and research activities, we will need to consider alternative, external, sources of funds.  There are many funding opportunities available at country, regional and or global levels that we might consider competing for either as an entire network, or as subgroups relevant to the specific funding calls.  I hope that in the coming year, we will be able to set into motion an agile and responsive process to meet our network goals.

With this in mind, we would like to streamline our communications with you, to ensure that information distributed by the secretariat, as well as responses and engagement from you, can be timely, efficient and effective.

  • Research stories which will be of interest to other WTUN colleagues and inspire collaboration
  • Events and Opportunities such as Conferences, Mobility Programmes, Research Collaboration projects. These should be shared with enough notice for members to engage.
  • Collaboration Calls from Researchers to connect or collaborate on themes
  • WTUN Funding Call; We hope to develop this in the future to include potential funding opportunities which the network can work to act on.

As we move through the year, I would be happy for you to make suggestions or interventions either at our Operational Board meetings or by communicating directly with either Chawin or myself

WTUN welcomes Dr Ciarán Ó hAnnracháin as Operational Board Chair 2024-25

The World Technology Universities Network is pleased to welcome Dr Ciarán Ó hAnnracháin as Chair, WTUN Operational Board for 2024-25. Elected by his peers on the Operational Board to the role of Deputy last year, Ciarán’s tenure as chair formally began on 1 August 2024.

During his membership of the operational board, Dr Ó hAnnracháin has worked closely with the WTUN Secretariat and General Board on increasing membership of the network, as well as encouraging engagement and participation of ATU staff and students in the network’s activities. This include hackathons, student competitions, PhD student research bursaries and staff research exchanges.

“Participation in these activities allows staff and students to engage with colleagues around the world, giving a real and important global dimension to their work and studies.  It allows us all to look beyond our Euro-centric view of the world and work with students and staff from across the globe, many of whom may have different experiences and perspectives but share a common goal of addressing the 17 SDGs.  I am firmly committed to ensuring that as many staff and students have these opportunities while working and studying at all our ATU campuses”, said Dr Ó hAnnracháin.
Together with WTUN Development Manager, Denise Whitehead, Dr Ó hAnnracháin will travel to Toulouse, location of this year’s EAIE Conference, in September to meet with existing WTUN members and to promote the work of this international alliance of technology universities.
